Application of microCT in the field of archaeological relics

Dr. Sun Zhenfei and Professor Liu Siran and Associate Professor He Xiaolin have published an article in the Journal of Archaeological Science, an internationally renowned archaeological journal. In this paper, the internal structure, composition and production process of Taijiasi pottery were studied and classified by means of microCT, and the complicated production process and use strategy of pottery materials in Taijiasi of Middle Shang Dynasty in Funan, Anhui province were revealed.

X-ray Powder Diffractometer

This study reconstructs the complex production and use process of pottery patterns at Taijiasi site and reveals many technological innovations of pottery patterns in the Middle Shang Dynasty. This study also demonstrates the significant advantages of micro-CT technology in characterizing ceramic ware, which can reveal the composite structure inside the material without damage and restore the key technology in the production of ceramic ware.
